Code: Survey was developed for the Morphosis-designed Caltrans District VII Headquarters in downtown Los Angeles as an architectural and digital installation. Whereas the building houses a grid of 168 glass panels of images related to transportation, each panel engraved with an alphanumeric code, the website is its searchable counterpart of photographs, codes and an index of keywords. Images, texts, film footage and audio from interviews with Caltrans employees as well as native Californians intermingle in Green’s website as a dynamic archive that undermines and complicates our expectation of searching any form of place. Code: Survey exists as a process allowing temporary imaginary inhabitation ...

It’s tempting to call sorry to dump on you like this.zip a pornographic work, since an actual porn collection is embedded within it—the artist’s own archive of men accumulated in fifteen years of web browsing. But these JPGs serve only as a substrate: thin scaffolding for an epic textual work that hangs loosely from the files.

To create his image-based narratives, Cooper arranges found GIFs into vertical sequences, two or three at a time, and then stacks them into tall columns, which are scrolled. On June 27, 2016, Google deactivated the popular blog of writer and artist Dennis Cooper. Visitors to the site were shown this message:   “Blog has been removed. Sorry, the blog at denniscooper-theweaklings.blogspot.com has been removed. This address is not available for new blogs. Did you expect to see your blog here? See: ‘I can’t find my blog on the Web, where is it?’”   Fourteen years of artistic output archived on the Google-owned Blogger site appeared ...

The latest Download commission, by Sheida Soleimani, laments the death of Reyhaneh Jabbari, who was convicted and hanged in Iran on October 25, 2014 for the alleged murder of her rapist. to oblivion.zip, a dirge-like work that eulogizes Jabbari’s untimely death, consists almost entirely of Jabbari’s own written and spoken words. Once expanded, the ZIP file presents a multi-layered work of nested folders that contain execution records, letters, photographs, and voice recordings. Soleimani has been creating photographic and sculptural works focused on human rights violations in Iran since 2015. This is the first time that she has used a digital ...

The Lesson of Zoology first appeared in the trash heap of contemporary Lisbon. While researching the role of Lisbon’s Geographical Society in one of the first planetary colonizations, we happened upon an antiquarian bookshop with seemingly endless piles of natural history lithographs. Among them, The Lesson stood out as an especially compelling meta-image of just what a lesson is—an ordering of nature, by way of presentation, about who intended to possess the earth.

Sara Giannini Dear Alessandro, thanks so much for your participation to Unfold as our 4th guest curator. Your Unfold#4: daily_unfold(ing) seems to show a structuralist approach to the digital folder, constituting the most meta Unfold issue so far! I am referring to the fact that the folders are rarely only containers but rather enunciation and narrative devices. Where did this exploration of the folder structure lead you? Alessandro Ludovico The folder has been used for its symbolic qualities by net artists and software artists since the ‘90s. These qualities include being a container which has a universal icon, but whose content is only limited by the OS structure or the ...
